This project was a collaboration between our class and the Vincennes University English Department, where we were tasked with designing graphics for various student poems. Each student was assigned two poems to create graphics for, ensuring diversity in interpretation and design. We faced a tight timeframe and our designs were judged.
Haunted House
In approaching this poem, I found it challenging to construct a narrative due to its abstract nature. Instead, I focused on capturing the poem's theme visually through carefully selected graphics that complemented and enhanced it.
The chosen imagery of a haunted house in the rain resonated with elements of the poem, creating a somber and atmospheric mood. Additionally, the inclusion of trees and grass added depth and perspective to the design.
To add dynamism to the composition, I incorporated subtle rain effects that shifted towards the text, creating a sense of movement and cohesion within the design.
A Girl and 3 Witches
In this design, my goal was to visually convey the narrative and atmosphere of the poem while engaging the viewer in its story. Recognizing the challenge of illustrating specific scenes from the poem, I opted to depict the lead-up to the narrative.
Placing the girl at the bottom left, gazing up at the haunted house, allowed for perspective and depth within the composition. Her holding a magic wand adds to the thematic elements of the poem and contributes to the sense of anticipation.
Strategic placement of the three witches guides the viewer's eye across the design, leading towards the focal point of the moon overlapping with the haunted house and a witch, emphasizing their significance in the narrative. Clouds in the sky provide contrast and texture, enhancing the overall atmosphere of the scene.
